TTRA visits SFGH Post Natal Unit

Members of the Trinidad and Tobago Reading Association (TTRA) paid a surprise visit to five new mothers on the Post Natal Unit of the Labor Ward on Thursday 8th September, 2016. This TTRA project entitled ‘Read to me’ is to sensitize new mothers on the importance of positive communication with their newborns. The mothers were encouraged to start talking to their newborn even as they came out of the womb. Many people harbor a misconception that newborns are unable to understand words, but the fact is babies do listen to loving tones.

Safety Wardens graduate at CDHF

On August 10th, 2016, the Disaster Coordination Unit of the South-West Regional Health Authority hosted its graduation ceremony for 32 Safety Wardens from the Couva District Health Facility. CDHF was the first of the three District Health Facilities within the SWRHA to complete the second phase of Safety Warden Training. These graduates have been sensitized on basic disaster preparedness and the role and fundamentals of being Safety Wardens.

MCHC celebrates World Breastfeeding Week 2016

If mothers believe that exclusive breast-feeding for six months is important to their babies and themselves they will find a way to do it. In modern times however, working and caring for a baby takes multitasking at a new level. Mothers therefore need to effectively plan ahead.

The seventh annual Breastfeeding Seminar will take place at the La Brea Health Centre on Monday 15th August. This seminar aims to promote and encourage breastfeeding through lectures and demonstrations in keeping with World Breastfeeding Week which is celebrated August 1st to 7th annually. Come learn more about the nutritional benefits of breastfeeding, proper feeding techniques, the composition and storage of breast milk. The Community Liaison Unit will be celebrating their 10th anniversary with an Open Day on Monday 8th August, 2016 at the San Fernando General Hospital’s Foyer from 8:00 am to 12 noon. Health screenings inclusive of Body Mass Index, blood sugar and blood pressure testing will be available to all. Persons can also receive free counselling sessions on developing and maintaining healthy lifestyles and giveaways. Come support the Community Liaison Unit as they celebrate a decade of providing healthcare services to clients in the SWRHA.
County Victoria Healthy Me Camp

The staff of the County Medical Office of Health Victoria in conjunction with staff from the South-West Regional Health Authority hosted their third day of Healthy Me Camp on Wednesday 20th July, 2016 at the Pleasantville Community Centre. Approximately 40 students between the ages of seven and 13 from county Victoria attended this year’s event. The camp was held from Monday 18th July to Friday 22nd July, 2016. The focus of the camp was to influence healthy lifestyles in children who are overweight and show signs of obesity.

County St. Patrick will be hosting their Healthy Me Camp from Monday 18th to Friday 22nd July, 2016 at the Techier Community Centre. The Camp was designed to teach children in the St. Patrick West Cluster, between the ages of 6 and 11, the importance of proper nutrition and physical activities while encouraging them to adopt healthy lifestyle habits.
