10 000 Diabetic Retinopathy Screenings

The Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Service celebrated its milestone of conducting 10,000 screenings with a commemorative function on May 23, 2018 at the San Fernando Teaching Hospital’s northern conference room.

This service started as a pilot project in the South-West Regional Health Authority in 2013 in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Johns Hopkins International.  After the project ended in 2014 the programme was continued and to date the SWRHA is the only public health institution to offer this service for diabetic clients. Diabetic retinopathy is a major complication of diabetes mellitus that effects the eyes and can lead to advanced sight threatening disease.

On hand to mark the occasion was The Honourable Minister of Health Mr. Terrence Deyalsingh who congratulated the DRSS team on their achievement. Minister Deyalsingh paid tribute to the DRSS clients and said that we are here because of our patients and we must recognise their value - their contribution to education, the economy and society. He also highlighted the current health situation in relation to the explosion of non-communicable diseases in Trinidad and Tobago and that it would take a national effort to curb its growth.
