A tribute to Midwives

The School of Midwifery at the San Fernando General Hospital held their International Day of the Midwife celebration on May 1st, 2019 at the Harris Promenade Band Stand in San Fernando to pay tribute to the work of midwives as essential care providers to mothers and newborn babies. In keeping with this year’s theme Midwives defenders of women’s rights the Outreach was an avenue to share information with the public about: who midwives are and how to join this profession, respectful maternity care, breastfeeding, family planning, and the process of labour using demonstration dolls.

Mrs. Kathyann Elbourne, General Manager Nursing, lauded the contribution of midwives to protecting the rights of women providing quality care to their newborn babies and encouraged them to focus on innovative ways to help improve service and accessibility. Mrs. Elbourne continued by telling them that they should be proud of their chosen profession since midwives are positioned at the point in their careers where they are witnessing God’s greatest miracle and are assisting in bringing new nations on this earth.
