South-West Regional Health Authority’s Psychiatric Department hosted its second Psychological and Mental Health First Aid Training Session on November 29th, 2016 at the Level 2 Conference Room, San Fernando Teaching Hospital. Fifty members of the clergy attended the training session aimed at teaching church leaders to provide supportive and practical help to persons or members suffering serious crisis event. The session featured presentations centred on Depression Guidelines, Psychological First Aid, Helping Someone with Drug Use Problems and Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviours.

Mr. Gosine in his welcome address to the participants explained that these training sessions are a “sequel to SWRHA’s World Mental Health Day celebrations and consistent with the pragmatic, but visionary theme of World Mental Health Day.”   Mr. Pooran Sankar, Regional Manager Psychiatric/Mental Health Services and staff from the Psychiatric Department are conducting these Psychological and Mental Health First Aid Training Sessions, which subsequently will be offered to religious leaders from other faith-based groups.
