Psychological and Mental Health First Aid Training Session for Police Officers

Twenty-six police officers from the Southern Division, Central Division, Community Policing Secretariat and South Western Division participated in the fifth Psychological and Mental Health First Aid training session, hosted by the Psychiatric Department on May 26th, 2017 at Level 3 Conference Room, San Fernando Teaching Hospital. This brief training session was designed to equip officers with knowledge to recognise and respond to persons with mental illnesses, while facilitating the referral process for specialised treatment available at the SWRHA. The session’s presentations were centred on Psychological First Aid, Depression, Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviours, Substance Abuse, Self-Harm and Anxiety. These Psychological and Mental Health First Aid sessions are being coordinated by Mr. Pooran Sankar, Regional Manager Psychiatric/Mental Health Services and the staff at the Psychiatric Department.
