Psychiatric Department hosts 3rd Psychological and Mental Health First Aid Training Session

Twenty Imams from the South-West Region participated in the third Psychological and Mental Health First Aid training session, hosted by the Psychiatric Department on January 10th, 2016 at Level 3 Conference Room, San Fernando Teaching Hospital. This brief training session was designed to equip imams with knowledge and confidence to recognise and respond to mental health problems in persons in their communities, while facilitating the referral process for specialised treatment available at the SWRHA.

The session’s presentations were centred on Psychological First Aid, Depression Guidelines, Helping Persons with Drug Use Problems and Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviours. Students and members of the clergy participated in the previous two sessions held in 2016. These Psychological and Mental Health First Aid sessions are being coordinated by Mr. Pooran Sankar, Regional Manager Psychiatric/Mental Health Services and the staff at the Psychiatric Department and will continue to roll out these sessions to members of the public in 2017.
