Emergency Medicine Public Conference at Debe Secondary School

The South-West Regional Health Authority partnered with the Rotary Club of Penal and the Debe Secondary School Interact Club to host an Emergency Medicine Public Conference at the Debe Secondary School on Saturday 16th February, 2019 geared towards increasing knowledge of the Emergency Department and guiding persons’ response to various emergency medical situations.

The Conference featured eight presentations by doctors from the Emergency Department, San Fernando General Hospital on topics including the role of the Emergency Department, Chest Pain, Seizures, Bites and Stings, Medical emergencies during floods, Wound Care, burns, and Toxins in the Home. These well- executed, informative sessions captured the attention of the audience of approximately 50 persons who also got the opportunity to interact with the doctors who work daily at the Emergency Department, SFGH. Mr. Fazad Mohammed from the T&T Defence Force gave an engaging presentation detailing how to respond during earthquakes and floods. SWRHA Nursing staff also performed blood pressure and blood sugar testing.

Dr. Robin Sinanan, Medical Director Secondary Care Services (Ag.) in his opening remarks, highlighted that the SWRHA’s focus on taking healthcare to the people in communities throughout the South-West Region. Dr. Akenath Misir, brought greetings on behalf of the President of the Rotary Club of Penal. He stressed the importance of “premum non nocere”, latin for “first do no harm” and encouraged persons to be attentive to the information presented by the medical team so that when confronted with these types of medical emergencies persons can efficiently and accurately respond.

The event was well attended by members of the Interact Club, a youth arm of the Rotary Club of Penal at Debe Secondary School, which is headed by Ms. Teshana McQueen and composed of approximately 35 students working together to positively impact the lives of their peers and persons in the community through beautification projects, health competitions and various outreaches.
