Eastern Virginia Medical School Emergency Department Exchange Program

During the period 28th November 2018 to 5th December 2018, the Emergency Department (ED), San Fernando General Hospital hosted two (2) doctors from Eastern Virginia Medical School, USA – Dr. Carol Mc Cammon, Director of International Emergency Medicine Fellowship Programme and Dr. Lipika Bot a Fellow at the school and a practicing ED Physician. After consultation with her nursing management team extended an invitation for nurses from SWRHA to visit Eastern Virginia Medical School in the USA.

In June 2019, Ms. Susan Joachim (Assistant Head Nurse – ED and Trauma trained) and Ms. Lou Ann Dass-Harold (Trauma trained Registered Nurse) were granted approval by the Authority to participate in this Study Visit at the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, USA. The purpose was to meet with the nursing team and review their processes and systems with the aim to adopt best practices in nursing care at the San Fernando General Hospital, Emergency Department. This visit was also in keeping with the creating of Links and International Benchmarking on the whole with a view of modernizing the Nurse Management approach in the clinical interventions in the Emergency Department. The SWRHA Nurses visited six Hospitals and observed the Emergency Department Nursing processes involving patient flow at these hospitals (Sentara Obici, Sentara Belle Harbour, Sentara Virginia Beach, Sentara Leigh Memorial, Sentara Norfolk General).
