NUTRITION TIP MONDAY!

Water is essential for life!

Did you know that most people don’t need 8 cups of water a day to stay healthy?

How much fluid you need depends on your age, sex and activity level. Hot weather and your health status (for instance having a fever or vomiting) can also increase your needs.

Generally 8 to 10 cups of water per day works for most adults.

We need water for many reasons! Water helps your body:

  • Keep its temperature under control
  • Cushion organs and joints
  • Protect your spinal cord and other sensitive tissues
  • Digest and carry nutrients around your body
  • Get rid of wastes and keeps your bowels regular

Here are some tips to meet your fluid needs:

  • Don’t ignore your thirst.
  • Choose water when you are thirsty and avoid soft drinks and other sweetened beverages.
  • Drink a glass of water when you wake up each morning and keep a glass on your side table at bedtime.
  • You can also have a glass of water before or after each meal.
  • Keep a reusable water bottle nearby for easy access when you are at work, school or out and about.
  • Add a wedge of lime or lemon (or any fresh fruit) to your water. This improves the taste and may help you drink more.
  • Choose water when eating out.
  • Remember to drink even more fluids when you are active and during hot weather.

Water is calorie free and a great way to quench your thirst. Boost your water intake today!
