Lactation Unit promotes Breastfeeding

In a demonstration of their commitment to fostering a breastfeeding culture in the South-West Region the staff at the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative Lactation Unit hosted a Breastfeeding Promotion on May 16th, 2019 at the San Fernando Teaching Hospital Maternal and Child Health Clinic. They adopted the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action’s 2019 theme Empower parents enable breastfeeding by providing vital information about how to initiate breastfeeding, healthy food choices during breastfeeding, how to manage common difficulties and how to access support required for continued breastfeeding success.

Visitors were invited to take the golden walk along the booths for demonstrations and oral presentations on:

  • the key points for positioning and attachment to ensure that the baby is correctly latched on for feeding
  • expression and storage of breast milk and cup feeding
  • Nutrition and breastfeeding – common concerns and the clarification of misconceptions
  • The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative – the ten steps to successful breastfeeding

They were also able to hear testimonials from Ms. Leah Ishmael Lynch and Ms. Adisha Bain. These “Gold Star Mothers”, successfully breastfed their babies for the first six months and continued breastfeeding along with supplementary foods for up to 2 years and over. They spoke about the health benefits for mother and child, the challenges they faced being working mothers who continued to provide their babies with breastmilk and the emotional bond their developed through this process.
