SWRHA Launches Three Smoking Cessation Clinics

Cigarette smoking is a universal concern as it plays a major role in addiction, as well as cardiovascular and lung disease. Studies have proven that cessation decreases health risks and improves overall health.  In light of this, the South-West Regional Health Authority’s Primary Health Care Department launched three Smoking Cessation Clinics at the C3 Centre on July 31st 2019.

The launch featured greetings from Dr. Varune Rampersad, Head of the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Centre (SAPTC) and remarks from Dr. Albert Persaud, Chief Executive Officer (Ag.) during which he highlighted the risks of third-hand smoke (chemical residue of tobacco that clings to clothing, hair etc. after a cigarette is extinguished).  Mr. Daren Ganga, President of the Daren Ganga Foundation was elated to be a part of this initiative and encouraged non-smokers to convince those who smoke of the health risks associated with smoking. Alderman Junia Regrello, His worship the Mayor of San Fernando, also shared remarks on the benefits of smoking cessation.

The Smoking Cessation Service will be operated by specially trained staff and will commence on August 7th, 2019 and continue on every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Couva District Health Facility, Siparia District Health Facility and Indian Walk Health Centre.
