In a bid to actively encourage persons living with diabetes in their community to develop healthy illness-management practices in their daily lives, the Freeport Health Centre hosted a seminar entitled "Disarming Diabetes" on March 17, 2010.
The seminar, held at the health centre, focused on a range of topics relevant to diabetes patients, including a presentation by Ms. Tricia Maynard on developing healthy dietary habits that work with treatments rather than against them.
Food demonstrations were conducted by Ms. Michelle McIntosh while Ms. Agnes Berkley discussed the importance of good foot care practices for diabetes patients, as these can lead to a reduced risk of leg amputations. There was also a quiz that tested the audience's knowledge of diabetes, an AccuChek demonstration and the feature presentation by Ms. Farah Gopaul.
